He would write out on a chalkboard at the gym what his workout would consist of and mark a line for each rep. Once completed each rep line would be turned into a cross and by the end of his session he would have the satisfaction of seeing his full workout plan crossed off on the wall. It gave him a great sense of achievement.
Do you write out your works? Or do you head to the gym / grab some weights / head out for a run/ etc. and just wing it. If you don't know what you are trying to achieve how can you push yourself to achieve it? For example, when you get on a bike, do you plan how far you will go? Do you think about the time in which you wish to complete the distance? If you do this then you will be able to workout the pace you need to maintain.
There are numerous sports watches out there that can enable you to set goals and targets, plan workouts and set challenges. I use my Garmin Vivioactive 3 to set a lower level speed on the bike so if I drop below it, my watch will vibrate warning me. Just knowing I can set it off is enough to motivate me to keep my legs pumping!
